The 5 Health Benefits of Milk Baths

If you can gain nutrients and other health benefits from drinking milk, it might make sense to think bathing in it should do you just as much good. But that's not quite the case. Milk typically contains vitamins A, D and E, which are great for your body if you consume them in your diet. Many skin care products include these vitamins as key ingredients, too, but they're often used in a different form, such as vitamin derivatives. And, unfortunately, your skin won't be able to really absorb the vitamins in a milk bath and get these same health benefits. Even so, that doesn't necessarily mean bathing in milk doesn't do your body any good.

The kitchen provides many ingredients that work well in your beauty routine. Pouring milk into a warm bath can benefit the skin in several ways. Honey, essential oils and other milk bath additives provide additional health benefits. Rinsing your skin well after the bath enhances the effects of the milk. Many bath products on the market also contain milk if you prefer a commercial product.

Enhances Relaxation

The soothing feeling of the milk in the water creates an overall relaxed, comfortable feeling. Taking a milk bath at the end of the day can help you improve your skin while helping reduce the stress of your day. Adding essential oils to the milk bath provides additional relaxation qualities. Try lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile or peppermint essential oils, based on your personal preference. Create an overall relaxing environment by dimming the lights, using candles and playing relaxing music in the background. The time alone may refresh your outlook.

Glowing Skin

Cleopatra took milk baths to help her skin stay soft, supple and glowing. You can do the same, or you can drink a few glasses of whole milk each day to get its benefits. Milk has several nutrients which help skin look its best. It has lactic acid which can act as an exfoliant and enzymes to help smooth skin. It also has amino acids that help keep skin moisturized. Milk can help prevent damage from environmental toxins because it has antioxidants. However, if you have a sensitivity to milk or dairy products, milk can actually aggravate your fairer skin.

Release Tension

When you can’t find a good masseur, a warm milk bath is the next best thing to release the bodily tension that causes soreness, tenderness, and other unwanted aches. The heat increases elasticity in your body, allowing it to relax and loosen up. When you’re ready to get out, gently stretch your muscles to take full advantage of this tension reliever before letting your pains slip down the drain.

Induce Fatigue

If you have trouble sleeping, perhaps a bath before bedtime will help you drift off to dreamland. Fatigue is a common experience after a hot bath because when you’re in the warm water your body dilates your blood vessels causing less blood to reach your brain. In response, your heart speeds up to try to circulate your blood faster. Basically, this is your body’s attempt to cool itself when your body temperature rises, and the fatigue is nature’s way of telling you that your body needs to rest.
